Do your kids lie?

As parents we get angry, hurt, frustrated and betrayed whenever we catch our child lying. But lying is normal. It is wrong but it is normal. Even adults lie in their daily life. But we should always teach our children that telling a lie is wrong and set a good example for them as children learn and do whatever they see around them.

Why do our children lie?

One of the ways kids use lying is to establish an identity and connect with peers. Lying can also be a response to peer pressure. Sometimes teens lie to keep a parts of their lives separate from their parents. At times it may even seem that they make up small lies about things that don't even seem terribly important. Another reason children lie is when they perceive the house rules and restrictions to be too tight. Lying may become a way for your child to have you believe he/she is following your rules. A little child can also lie, this behaviour of a kid may be just be his way of getting little attention. Younger children also make up stories. This is not lying but a way for them to engage their imaginations and start to make sense of the world around them. Most kids lie at one time or another to get out of trouble. A child lie to avoid getting into trouble. Children are more likely to lie if they see their parents doing it and getting away with it.

Things for you to do so that your child won't lie

Reward your kids for being truthful
Use inspiring stories. Try to narrate stories or books or articles that highlight the importance of honesty
Be encouraging and positive when your child tells the truth
Explain that honesty will please you and not lead to punishment
Start talking about honesty early
Ask for a promise of truthfulness from your child
Emphasis the importance of honesty in your family and praising your child for honesty
If your child is making up a story to you about something always respond him/her with encouraging words.
Avoid the situations where your child feels that he/she has to tell a lie. For example, if your child has spilled some milk and you ask her whether she did it, she might feel tempted to lie. To avoid this situation you could just say, ‘I see there’s been an accident with the milk. Let’s clean it up’
If your child is lying a lot, it’s a good idea to talk calmly about the issue with your child. Try making a time to talk, and then tell your child know how her lying makes you feel, how it affects your relationship with her, and what it might be like if family and friends stop trusting her
Also, help your kids understand that telling a lie can harm them also.

Kids at the young age crave their parent's attention  and they haven't yet learned that there are times when it is not appropriate possible for parents to provide it.
From a child's point of view, you are suddenly unavailable and does not listen to him or spend time with him, he starts to feel left out.

Why does my child interrupt all the time?
Interrupting comes naturally to children because they tend to forget that other people have needs that are as important as theirs. Even if your child knows that she's supposed to wait for a pause in the conversation and say, "Excuse me," the protocol slips her mind because what she has to say feels so urgent at that moment. Your child may be especially prone to interrupting if yours is a talkative family or if she often hears you and your spouse or other adult relatives finishing each other's sentences. You've probably already talked with her about when she should interrupt (the house is on fire) and when she shouldn't (she's bored). She probably also knows (even if she doesn't always remember) that the appropriate way to preface a necessary interruption is to quietly say, "Excuse me." But putting these principles into practice is much harder than merely comprehending them, especially for high-energy kids.

Offer your child plenty of positive attention as a preemptive strike. If you provide him with a dose of your undivided attention each day, he'll be less likely to exhibit attention-seeking behaviours, such as interrupting. Also, give him attention for positive behaviour, such as waiting patiently. When you know you'll be talking to someone for any length of time, plan ahead to keep your child occupied. If you're going to be on the phone for a few minutes, give him something to do and tell him the rules. Rub your child’s back to let her know you’re aware of her presence, but don’t make eye contact. “The message is: I know you’re there, but I need to finish my phone call.” Do give information, Explain to your child. Before you make the call You might say, “Daddy needs to talk to Grandma sometimes, and it’s not respectful for me to talk to two people at once. Unless it’s an emergency, you need to wait until I’m finished before asking your question.” An agreed-upon hand signal that indicates you’re not available to talk may also work well. Do make it possible to be close to you Keep a basket of quiet playthings or some stickers and a little book near the phone. Explain to your child that he is welcome to be near you, but not to interrupt you. Young kids have limited patience, so none of these strategies will give you the time and space for a long catch-up over the phone. Sometimes you may have to tell your caller your child needs you and you’ll call back.  Don’t blast your child when you get off the phone. It may take a few tries, but kids will learn not to interrupt you.A gentle talk about your expectations. Talking will only take you so far: It’s consistent and repeated actions, such as taking the call in another room, that help children learn that when you say you’re not available, you mean it.

It is the time to understand your child and help him/her to teach not to disturb you when you are doing something important or involved in conversation with others. Children need to understand that they can't be the centre of attraction all the time, sometimes the attention  is needed elsewhere also. But you need to gently encourage your child to understand this.

A child has the adverse effects whenever you beat him/her. Every parent should be aware of the bad effects that a child has after you beat him/her.

- Your child never trust you if you hit them for everything. The trust of the children will break.

- Too much scolding and hitting a child can make your him/her suffer from a lack of confidence. Beating a kid has a bad effect on a child's confidence. Also, they will start comparing themselves to other children.

- If a child is all the time beaten up by their parents then they will think that hitting is the only solution to all the problems.these children become aggressive when grow old. Also, they will always solve their problems by hitting others.

- These children will lack the decision making power. They will not be able to take any decision in life on their own. When they grew up they have psychological problems like no decision making power or serious mental disorders.

-The child will always be afraid of telling truth to their parents because of the fear of beaten up again. They started to believe that their parents will not understand them and hit them if they said something wrong.

- The one who gets respect gives respect. These children will never respect their parents or or elders or others too. Psychologists says that you can never your child by beating them. When you beat a child he get scared and he will never learn when he is afraid of something.

-It gives them a message that every adult has a right to hit and when they go out of their houses they do the same thing to others.

- Often a child who is beaten up everyday will start telling a lie so that their parents won't hit them again. It increases the communication gap between parents and children.

- Also, it gives child a thinking that the one who is strong is always right. He/she will decide what is right or what is wrong.

Does television hinder children’s language development?

Studies report a link between TV and language development in babies. The more time babies spend watching television, the more slowly they learn to talk. Some people conclude that the effects of television on children are direct and negative. According to this view, television is noxious, Watching TV makes you dumb. TV is linked with slower language acquisition because TV time tends to displace conversation time between babies and adults. Television is merely a medium for transmitting information. Surely it is the information that counts. Indeed, experiments have shown that kids who watch age-appropriate educational programs improvements in their abilities to recall information. What does seem likely is that babies have a relatively difficult time learning to talk by watching and listening to TV programs. To learn to speak, babies benefit from social interaction. Researchers discovered that social talk—one-on-one, back-and-forth conversation between adults and their children—was linked with better language development. The more time babies and toddlers were included in adult conversations, the more quickly their language skills improved. By contrast, listening to adult monologues—including storytelling was only weakly correlated with language development. The effect of two-way conversations was almost 6 times greater than the effect of merely listening to adults talk. the effect of television on children was neither positive nor negative. We should be concerned about the effects of television on children who are learning to talk. But the research on language acquisition doesn’t mean that television is the direct cause of learning delays. Instead, the more useful message is that babies benefit from genuine, back-and-forth conversations. Perhaps parents should worry a bit less about TV time and more about time spent in meaningful conversation with their kids.

Research has found that too much time spent in front of the television is hindering children’s speech. The survey conducted by the Communication Trust, also found that more than half (51 per cent) of those questioned think youngsters can suffer from speech problems if their parents do not talk to them enough. There has always been speculation amongst both parents and professionals about the effect that television can have on a child, but it is also important to realise its benefits. There is some research to suggest that quality TV programmes can have a beneficial effect on literacy activities, comprehension and recall in three and four-year-old.

Interactive programmes that encourage singing, signing, clapping and dancing can promote language development and imaginative play. Programmes that have themes of repetitive content can make it easier for children to learn new words. Studies show that toddlers who watch their favourite alphabet characters fare better in their knowledge of letter sounds when they go to pre-school than children who have no screen time. Children also benefit from snuggling up and watching television with an adult. The physical contact is good for them and parents can talk about the programme that they have watched together. High quality educational programmes can provide a window on the world for toddlers and help them to make sense of it. Some programmes can also inspire parents to play with their child. short periods in front of a television can help babies to focus on pictures, lights and colours a short distance away. Nevertheless, watching the screen for an hour or more may affect depth perception and long-range vision. Television programmes that have slow editing speeds, continuous narrative and a single gentle voice are much better for the under-twos than fast-paced programmes with lots of zooms, cuts and multiple voices.

In an ideal world, babies and toddlers would be happily entertained with activities other than television. However, it does play a big role in today's hectic society and preventing the under-twos from watching it may be an unrealistic goal for most parents. The key is to provide good quality age-appropriate programmes as part of a balanced schedule and to limit viewing to 10 minutes for babies and 20 minutes for toddlers at any one time. Television should not displace important activities such as outdoor play, social interaction, talk, physical exercise and going to the park. If used responsibly, the risks of harm are very low.

Every child should have reading habit from very young age. Here are some tips you can raise a good reader.

-Read from day one and read daily. From the day your new born comes into your life, you can start raising a reader. Read/sing aloud the soothing rhymes to your kids in your own voice. If you make reading to your child part of your daily routine, he/she is likely to grow up a reader.

-Let your kid see you reading. whether you love reading books or magazines or blogs or newspapers, let your child see you reading. Kids learn from what they observe and catch very quickly when they see others doing that same thing. your child is likely to catch your enthusiasm too.

-Create a reading space for your kids. It doesn't matter whether you have a big library in your home or a small bookshelves, the important thing is that you should have a reading space at your home or in your child's room.

-Take trips to library. Always take your little ones to library. It is a great place to explore new books and authors for free. Many libraries give chances to kids to develop reading habits and to see other kids doing the same.

-Let kids pick what to read. The trip to the library can be extra special when you give your child time to look around and see what catches his/her interest. He/She is more likely to want to read something he/she picked out himself. If you are concerned about him/her finding the right reading level or a suitable topic, just give him a section of books to choose from.

-Find reading moments in everyday life. Reading is not only about sitting down with a good book. It is a part of daily life too. As you go through your day, help your child keep an eye out for “reading moments.” They may be as simple as reading road signs, grocery lists or recipes.

-You can reread the favourite book. You may get tired of reading the same story over and over again. But it can help your child become a reader. Kids like to spot things they may have missed the first time in the story or pictures of their favourite books. Rereading also gives them a chance to connect the words they see on the page with the words they hear. Eventually, your child may start reading the book to you.

-Make sure that your children observe you reading on a regular basis. What you read is not important, when your child sees you reading recipes, magazines, newspapers, books, telephone directories, and other reading materials, it will reinforce the importance of reading. To stimulate reading, keep reading materials throughout the house. This will increase your child's access to books and printed material.

-Help them understand that reading does not only happen at school, it can happen anywhere. Studies suggest that learners who read outside of school are more successful readers and students. If you cannot read easily, talk about the pictures in books, magazines, and newspapers with your child. It is important for your child to observe your efforts in acquiring reading abilities. In addition, ask them to read aloud to you or to tell you about what they have read in their own words.

-Encourage your children to read in their native language. If reading skills are developed in the native language they will transfer into English. Developing reading skills in their native language will not hinder children's ability to read in English — it will help.

-Do not allow your kids to watch television until they have done their daily reading.
As your child becomes a better reader, talk about what he/she is reading. When your child finishes a new story or reading assignment, discuss the main ideas, new words and concepts, and your child's favourite section. This will help strengthen your child's reading comprehension skills.
